What is the Vikings FC Skills ACADEMY?
The idea for our academy style program is to reinforce the idea that soccer is not only skill based, but fun! After all, why would we even play a game if it’s not fun?!?! There are a lot of academies that put a lot of focus on competition at younger ages and while that can be fun and rewarding, laying foundations of strong core skills and developing a love and enjoyment for the game will better prepare players for competition level teams as they develop.
Academy students should expect to follow USSF’s Play Practice Play methodology and philosophy where fun games and small sided action help teach players to build on their fundamentals while enjoying the activities in a fun game like setting.
Real soccer skills will be taught and reinforced in the most fun way possible with each session hopefully concluding with small sided games and scrimmages to test out the newly acquired skills.
Sessions will be generally broken into three parts.
Play: Upon arrival. The most important part is getting players right into the action. When they arrive they will be set up with other players in their age group and jump right into the action with small soccer games that focus on the skill or concept being presented that day.
Practice: Now it’ll be time to reinforce an age and skill appropriate concept or skill for the day. One day might be defensive thinking while another could be focused solely on everyone’s favorite part, shooting!
Play: Finally, we will use our new skills in a game like setting, so players really begin to put the pieces together and use the skills they are learning in actual soccer scenarios. This is best done by playing soccer!!!
